Choosing Timeless Countertops

A Guide to Selecting Natural Countertops That Will Stand the Test of Time

COUNTERTOPS ARE ONE OF THOSE DECISIONS I DON'T WANT TO MAKE TWICE

They're expensive, they're permanent, and they take up enough visual space that they can completely change the feeling of a kitchen or bathroom.

So when I'm choosing countertops for a timeless home, I keep coming back to one thing:

Natural stone.

Finding a Compromise

I'll Take Patina Over Perfection

Natural stone has imperfections.

Marble will etch. It can scratch. It may develop little chips. And depending on the marble, it can stain.

I know that makes a lot of people nervous. Personally, it doesn't bother me.

If it were entirely up to me, I would happily put a beautiful, stain-prone marble all over my kitchen and accept whatever happened to it.

I'd rather have a natural material that develops character over time than a perfectly pristine kitchen.

My husband, however, drew the line at stains.

So we needed a compromise

The Marble That Won Over My Husband

After countless hours of research, I discovered Danby marble.

Danby is a real marble quarried in Vermont, and it's known for being less prone to staining than many traditional marbles.

And then I discovered Martha Stewart recommends it. SOLD!

We chose Danby Olympian White marble for our kitchen, and after six years, our countertops are still stain-free.

I get the softness, movement, and natural beauty I wanted from marble, while my husband doesn't have to embrace quite as much "patina" as I would have been willing to.

It's one of those decisions I would make again without hesitation.

My Favorite Marble for Bathrooms

For bathrooms, I come back again and again to Carrara marble.

There is just something about a powder room with honed Carrara countertops paired with classic marble subway tile.

Swoon.

It's simple, elegant, and has been used for generations.

And here's something that may surprise you: depending on the slab, fabrication, location, and application, Carrara can be one of the more affordable natural stone options.

Before automatically assuming engineered stone is the budget-friendly choice, I always think it's worth pricing natural stone.

You might be surprised.

Other Countertop Materials I Love

Marble is obviously my favorite, but it's certainly not the only natural stone I would consider.

I also love soapstone. It's moody, understated, and only becomes more beautiful as it develops a patina.

Quartzite can also be a beautiful option when you want natural movement and variation with different performance characteristics from marble.

And yes, I would absolutely use granite. Granite itself isn't dated. Certain granites are.

My Aunt Noreen and her daughter Terra both have honed, pure black granite in their kitchens, and it looks beautiful. It's quiet and understated and works seamlessly in the rest of their homes.

What I personally avoid are heavily speckled, high-contrast granites that immediately remind me of a particular design era.

What About Quartz?

Quartz can certainly be practical, and there are beautiful options available.

But if my goal is to create a home that feels established and becomes more beautiful with age, I would choose natural stone.

I love the imperfections. I love knowing no two slabs are identical. And I love materials that don't need to imitate something else.

Ultimately, that's what guides most of my material decisions.

I'm not looking for perfection.

I'm looking for something I'll still find beautiful after years of actually living with it.
